California Police Union Leader Charged With Importing Opioids
According to People, a California police union executive, Joanne Marian Segovia, is being charged with attempts to unlawfully import valeryl fentanyl. Segovia is accused of using both her personal and work computers to order opioids and other pills between October 2015 and January 2023.
The union official claims to have received numerous shipments from Hong Kong, Hungary, India, and Singapore, all with coded descriptions such as “wedding party favors,” “gift makeup,” or “chocolate and sweets,” Independent claims.
When interviewed by authorities on March 14, Segovia claimed that she had nothing to do with the shipments sent to her and blamed it on her housekeeper, however, government officials found messages on WhatsApp where she communicated with someone with an Indian phone number between January 2020 and March 2023, with messages mentioning shipments and photos of tablets and packages.
Segovia could be facing up to 20 years in prison.
