Delphine LaLaurie, also known as Madame Lalaurie, was a wealthy New Orleans socialite and slave owner; she first moved into the mansion in 1832 with her third husband Dr. Leonard Louis Nicolas LaLaurie, where she hosted many lavish parties. Upon moving into the house, LaLaurie immediately took control of the large number of slaves that were used as servants and began her sadistic and horrid treatment of the enslaved workers.

New York City’s ‘House of Death’

With such a storied history, this Manhattan enclave is bound to have some haunts. The ‘House of Death’ is located at 14 West 10th Street. According to TimeOut, this unassuming brownstone ranks as the 4th most haunted house in America right after the infamous Lizzie Borden House. Built in 1856, the House of Death has been home to notable tenants, the most famous being Mark Twain.

Located in Villisca, Iowa, this quaint piece of real estate is home to a grisly family annihilation. Reports state that on June 10th of 1912, the subject broke into the home sometime after midnight and bludgeoned the family to death with an axe.

Listed for $2 million, the bed and breakfast museum located in Fall River, Massachusetts, went up Monday. The three story clapboard is owned by Martha McGinn. Additionally, the house has been operated as a bed and breakfast since 1996. According to Suzanne St. John, the listing agent and part-time tour guide, the owner hopes that the house continues to be a business shared with others.
