Suspect Arrested in Connection with Fatal Shooting Spree in New York and D.C.

The suspect accused of shooting five men, two of them fatally, was arrested early this morning at his home in Washington D.C.

NBC News has confirmed that a senior law enforcement official identified the suspect as 30-year-old Gerard Brevard III. Details on how investigators connected Brevard to the shootings remains unclear, but his arrest came shortly after DC Police released close-up images of the suspect on social media.

Mr. Brevard’s father, Gerald Brevard Jr., issued a statement to the New York Times over text message, extending condolences to the victims and their families. He stated that his son suffers from mental illness, and while he “cannot speak to the details of the case,” he did address the “failure of the judicial system identifying that [his] son suffers from mental illness but not treating it.”

The names of the victims have not been released, and authorities are still investigating why Brevard targeted the homeless.
