The Legend of the "Chair Of Death"

The Legend of the "Chair Of Death"

Currently located in a museum North Yorkshire, England lies Thomas Busby’s “Chair of Death.” The chair is known to be cursed and everyone who sits in it seems to die. Keep reading to learn more about the chilling story behind this seemingly ordinary chair.

This story takes place in late 1600’s when a man named Daniel Auty began committing crimes such as, counterfeit currency and theft. Daniel had a daughter named Elizabeth who soon married a local man named Thomas Busby. Daniel and Busby soon began committing crimes together across the city.

Due to distribution disagreements among other issues, Daniel and Busby’s relationship quickly turned awry. According to sources, shortly after the disagreement Daniel went to Busby and Elizabeth’s home where he demanded his daughter to return home and away from Busby. Busby returned to the home drunk that evening to find Daniel sitting in his favorite chair. With tensions running high and previous built-up anger from the argument the night before, Busby became furious, which led to another argument between him and Daniel. Soon, Daniel left the home, but that would be his last visit.

Busby, still upset, went to Auty’s home where he beat him to death with a hammer.

Busby was soon found guilty of murder and set to be executed. His final request before his death was to visit the inn. There, he placed a curse upon the chair. Since, everyone who has dared to sit in the chair has either committed suicide, had a tragic accident, or suddenly died.
