Suspects in Murder of Kyhara Tay Arrested

Two teenagers are in custody in connection with the death of 11-year-old Kyhara Tay, who was shot and killed by a stray bullet in the Bronx last week.

The shooter, Matthew Godwin, 15, was arrested on Friday after police found him hiding out in a hotel with his mother. The man who was driving the moped, 18-year-old Omar Bojang, turned himself in to the NYPD on Monday, NBC News reports.

Godwin has been charged with murder, manslaughter, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. Despite his age, he has been charged as an adult, but his mugshot has not been released. The charges against Bojang are pending.

According to police, Godwin and Bojang were targeting a 13-year-old boy. The boy was able to duck in a nearby apartment building. Godwin shot at the boy, but the bullet instead hit Tay as she was coming out of a nail salon with her friend.

The 13-year-old has been identified and has spoken to police, but it remains unclear as to why he was targeted by Godwin and Bojang.

Godwin has had no prior arrests, but was the victim of a shooting in January. Bojang had been previously sought by police in connection with a string of armed robberies in the Bronx. Police say Bojang had been shot in the leg on two separate occasions.

The NYPD speculates that Godwin and Bojang are involved in gang activity, but the investigation remains ongoing.
