DA Drops Charges Against Woman Accused of Committing ‘Self-Induced Abortion’

A 26-year-old Texas woman who was arrested and charged with murder on Thursday after being accused of committing “self-induced abortion” will not be indicted, People Magazine reports.

On Sunday, District Attorney Gocha Allen Ramirez announced that he will dismiss the charges against Lizelle Herrera, stating that she “cannot and should not be prosecuted for the allegations against her.”

Ms. Herrera’s arrest comes just a few months after Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed legislation that bans abortions after 6 weeks. The bill also gives a financial incentive to private citizens who report any illegal abortions.
