18-Year-Old Mother Faces Charges After Abandoning Her Newborn Baby In A Dumpster

Alexis Avila, 18, has been arrested and is being charged with attempted murder and felony charges after confessing to abandoning her newborn baby in a dumpster behind a shopping mall in Hobbs, New Mexico on Jan. 7th.

According to Independent UK, a 911 call was made by a group of individuals searching for valuables within the dumpster when they opened a bag with a newborn baby inside. Police state the baby was found alive, wrapped inside a blanket with his umbilical cord still attached. It was estimated the baby was inside the dumpster for about six hours until he was found.

The newborn was taken to a nearby hospital and is now in stable condition.

After reviewing surveillance footage, police tracked down Avila, who confessed. Avila told police she had no clue she was pregnant until Jan. 6th when she experienced stomach pains and after giving birth the following day, she panicked.

KCBD states that Avila has pleaded not guilty in court and was placed on house arrest by the judge until her trial.

Individuals who wish to donate on behalf of the newborn may do so at CYFD.org
