Mother Arrested for Murdering Baby 26 Years Ago

Foxnews reports that Lee Ann Daigle was arrested on Monday in Massechusets and charged with the murder of her newborn baby. Allegedly, the murder occurred in Maine in 1985, when Daigle gave birth to baby “Jane Doe” and left her in a gravel pit amid subzero temperatures. The umbilical cord was still attached to the baby.

The cold case began when a Siberian Husky brought his owners what appeared to be a doll. The dog’s owners, Lorraine Pelletier and her husband, quickly realized that it was the body of a newborn baby girl. She and her husband were unable to have children of their own, and her response to the news of Daigle’s arrest is conflicted:

Never, ever, ever did I dream, even with DNA, that they would find the mother. It was so long ago. It puts me in a situation where I am angry at [Daigle], but then again, you can’t hold on to that anger. She was scared, and it just breaks my heart she never rang our doorbell and never asked for help.

According to Maine State Police, there was a tremendous amount of effort put into the case in 1985, but it was thanks to the recent advancements in the technology of DNA and genetic genealogy that investigators were able to identify Daigle as a suspect.

Daigle has pleaded not guilty and is currently being held in Aroostook County Jail in Houlton, Maine.
