Wanted Wisconsin Man Taken Into Custody After Hours Long Standoff in Iowa

Simone Hughes, 47, of Milwaukee, has been arrested after an eight-hour long standoff with police in sub-zero temperatures. Hughes was wanted in Milwaukee on charges of first-degree intentional homicide for the shooting death of his girlfriend, 41-year-old Quinette Walters. He also shot their 14-year-old daughter as she ran away, but she survived.

The shooting occurred on January 6th on North 36th Street in Milwaukee at their shared home. The pair were arguing about breaking up when Hughes became physical with her. When their daughter tried to separate them, she slipped onto the floor. Hughes has been accused of shooting Walters on their front porch.

His daughter attempted to lock him out of their home, but he shot through the door. She ran up the stairs while he reentered the home with a key. She jumped out of a window upstairs, and then her father proceeded to shoot at her from the window. She was taken to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Police in Waterloo, Iowa, received a tip Wednesday morning around 1:30 saying he was in a house on the 100th block of East Parker Avenue, according to the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier. It is unclear if Hughes has any connections to the Waterloo area.

According to the Associated Press, the police have said Hughes was the only one in the home and he was armed. Hughes hid in a car in the garage for a time during the standoff. Hughes was taken into custody around 9:20 a.m. Hughes was taken to a hospital for evaluation after he made threats to hurt himself.
