Your Next Favorite Podcast: 90s Crime Time
Simone is the brains behind the 90s Crime Time Insta, and now the podcast! If you love the fabulous decade of the 90s, this is definitely the podcast for you! We chatted with Simone about her love of the 90s, the inspiration behind her podcast, and the massacre at Luby’s Restaurant, which has always haunted her.
What inspired you to start your podcast?
I started 90s Crime Time as an Instagram page in October 2019. I was born in the 1990, so pretty much my early life consisted of everything 90s! I started this project as a hobby, but when I got a consistent growth of followers, I began to take a more serious interest and try to build a bigger brand my followers could be proud of. I enjoyed doing a lot of research of each 90s themed crime story I posted on my page, until my followers asked me, “Where’s the podcast?!” So I hesitated, because I was SUPER nervous of starting one, and then after some planning, and getting some equipment, 90s Crime Time the Podcast was launched in February 2020!
What got you interested in true crime? Was there a murder in your hometown? A story that has always haunted you?
Growing up and staying the night at my grandmother’s home, she’d have true crime shows such as Dateline and 48 Hours playing every Friday and Saturday night. As I grew older I began paying more attention to these shows and became hooked. Who committed the murder and why? Who were the suspects? Was the setting of the crime at a mansion, behind a club, in a field? I was obsessed! When Snapped premiered and the ID channel was created, it was a dream come true for my True Crime obsession. Backtracking to my childhood, near my hometown near Nashville, there was a serial killer by the name of Paul Reid, who later became known as “The Fast Food Killer”. I remember feeling so scared, because he didn’t just kill in one city, he hit multiple cities in the area. There tended to be many different fast food murders in the Tennessee area during the 90s.

What’s a murder, disappearance, or crime story that keeps you up at night?
The massacre at Luby’s Restaurant in Texas haunts me. Imagine minding your business during lunch, and then a pickup truck rams into the side of the restaurant, you go to help, and then the driver starts shooting at you and everybody else. It just seems so scary that it can happen anytime and anywhere. Also, while doing research for this crime, I accidentally came across the crime scene photos, and it was something out of a horror film. This man did major damage and unimaginable terror.
