The Mysterious 'Long Island Serial Killer'
In 2010, Shannan Gilbert, a 24-year-old sex worker, went to a client’s house in Oak Beach, Long Island. She called 911 while leaving the house, repeating, “There is somebody after me.” She wanted the officers to locate her address; by the time they called her back, she had already disappeared.
Her investigation led to the discovery of four other bodies on Gilgo Beach: women in their 20s who had been wrapped in burlap sacks.
They were later identified as Maureen Brainard Barnes(2007), Melissa Barthelemy(2009), Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello(2010). They were placed roughly 500 feet apart. They all shared striking similarities with their hazel green eyes and 4’11 height.
Months later, Gilbert disappeared her belongings were found eight miles from Gilgo Beach. Based on her call, investigators theorized that she might have died of hypothermia. The Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s official report stated that her cause of death was “undetermined”. The phone call recordings that were released in May repeatedly prove her terror of getting murdered. Even though an independent autopsy by the renowned forensic pathologist Michael Baden found Gilbert had suffered injuries, the FBI believed that it was a tragic accident and it was not related to the other murders.
Investigators haven’t been able to determine whether a lone serial killer or several suspects were involved in the killings. No arrests have been made, and no suspects have ever been publicly named in any of the cases.
