The Most Popular Conspiracy Theories About the Denver International Airport

Since its opening in 1995, The Denver International Airport has been subject to numerous outlandish conspiracy theories. Here are the top five most popular ideas:

1. The DIA was built by the New World Order

One of the most common theories is that the DIA was built by the New World Order with ties to Nazism. Some even go as far as to say that the runways are built to resemble a swastika, but photos from an ariel view show that the airport’s runways do not actually resemble the hate symbol. People have also noted there are “strange” markings on buildings, which are believed to be connected to the New World Order. According to Mental Floss, the markings are references to the Navajo language or periodic table. Conspiracy theorists are not buying it…

2. Mustang, the Giant Blue Horse, is Cursed

“The Blue Mustang,” also known as “Blucifer,” is a 32-foot fiberglass sculpture by artist Luis Jiménez, located along Peña Boulevard. The statue, originally inspired by the sculpture Mesteño, but sinister events surrounding the massive art piece have led people to believe conspiracy theories. Many people like to connect the glowing red eyes of the ominous statue to the Four Horsemen of the Apocolypse. Jiménez died two years before the piece was finished when a part of the statue fell on him and severed an artery in his leg. Since then, theories continued to sprout about the horse’s “real” purpose.

3. The DIA Contains Illuminati Headquarters

Many theories have stemmed due to the many unmarked buildings and underground areas around the airport’s property. The biggest theory being the DIA is home to underground Illuminati layers. There are rumors that a time capsule is buried on the property that bears symbols from the Free Masons, which are “linked” to the Illuminati. The DIA stated on its website that rumors say that the first few buildings on the property were not built properly, but instead of demolishing them, the airport simply buried them and built more buildings on top. This gave the Illuminati its own "underground lair.”

4. The Airport’s Underground Tunnels Hold Bunkers

Rumors surrounding the apocalypse are probably some of the biggest conspiracy theories about the DIA, and the underground tunnels fuel that fire. There are tunnels underneath the airport, including a train that runs between concourses and a defunct automated baggage system. However, many believe the true nature of these tunnels is much darker. Many believe that the tunnels include underground bunkers that will serve as a safe place for the world’s elite during the apocalypse.

5. The Artwork Provides Clues About the End of the World

The DIA is home to many eerie art pieces and that has led people to theorize that these artworks are giving us clues about the end of the world. Besides the giant horse statue, some of these artworks include murals by Leo Tanguma. Some believe that there is alleged Nazi imagery in the murals. This would be proof that the airport is somehow linked to a fascist secret society. Others believe the murals show potential doomsday scenes. According to the Denver Post, many people fixated on the random gargoyle statues that seem to “watch over” the airport. While they may seem suspicious, gargoyles have been used throughout the centuries in architecture as a totem to "ward off" evil spirits and protect buildings. That is why many of the statues are found near baggage claim.
