North Carolina Man Sentenced to Death for the Murder of Teenage Daughter

This past Friday, Joshua Lee Burgess, 35, of Monroe, North Carolina was sentenced to death for the atrocious murder of his 15-year-old daughter, Zaria Burgess, back in 2019.

According to the Union County District Attorney’s Office, Burgess killed his daughter by slitting her throat after “psychologically and sexually torturing her for 22 hours” on the 18th of August in 2019. Motives for this murder centered around lust and control.

Directly after killing his daughter, Burgess walked to the Union County police station and confessed to the murder, giving officers his address and the location of Zaria’s body.

Since his arrest, alongside being sentenced to the death penalty, Burgess has been convicted of one count of first-degree murder, one count of statutory rape, three counts of statutory sex offense, and one count of first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. He was also charged with an additional 76 years in prison.
