Georgia Man Indicted for Deadly May Boat Collision
NBC News reports 45-year-old Mark Stegall was indicted yesterday for “10 counts of first-degree homicide by vessel, six counts of serious injury by vessel, boating under the influence, and reckless operation.” The Georgia man faces years in prison for his boat crash on May 28th, which killed five and injured four.
The incident occurred close to the Oatland Island Wildlife Center docks in Chatham County, GA, states People Magazine. Stegall was allegedly boating while under the influence of alcohol and steering his vessel down the wrong side of the river. He was arrested at the scene of the collision.
Robert ‘Stephen’ Chauncey, one of Stegall’s two passengers, was one of the victims. Four of the six passengers in the other boat were killed: 51-year-old Chris Leffler, his wife 50-year-old Lori Leffler, and their sons 23-year-old Zach Leffler and 17-year-old Nate Leffler. Multiple survivors were injured, and three of the bodies were not recovered until the following day, states NBC News.
