Spooky Creations of Batwings and Butterflies

Spooky Creations of Batwings and Butterflies

Bria Dauncey has been crocheting since her grandma taught her as a child, but her spooky creations are not your typical granny crafts as she crochets everything from goat deities to Voodoo dolls. If you’re looking for a gift for the spook lover in your life or even just for yourself, look no further than Batwings and Butterflies. Bria sat down with MMN for an exclusive interview about her and her art.

What persuaded you to start your business?

“I wanted to start a creepy cute business that matched my aesthetic and offered more in the way of alternative handmade items. With the help of my friends and networking with other artists in my community, I was able to open my business in June of 2020.”

How long have you been crocheting?

“20 years, my aunt started me with the basics when I was 8 years old and everything since then has been self-taught, learned through pattern books or YouTube.”

How did you come up with the name for your business?

“I needed a name to fit the two major facets of my style and while playing around with a pattern idea for a butterfly with wings shaped like bat’s wings, I ended up drawing out a logo and pulled the name from there!”

Is there any true crime or paranormal shows that keep you up at night, and why?

“Unsolved Mysteries! I think the most unsettling thing about it, apart from the eerie intro music, was the unknown. I watched them as a kid, and I couldn’t imagine someone just not being found or for a death to be unexplained. Even now as an adult, it gives me the creeps!”

If you could hear more about a True Crime or paranormal being, what would it be?

“Aokigahara, the suicide forest in Japan! While I absolutely understand and respect the privacy and the sacredness of the forest, it would be cool to hear recordings and readings of paranormal activity within the forest itself. I want to know if it is really haunted!”

What motivates you to start your day?

“Coffee with oat milk, and usually some Golden Girls or Oxygen TV! “

Are you willing to do custom orders for people?

“Absolutely! Unless specified, every listing on my site is made to order! Just write the request in the notes of your order. If it’s not up on the site, shoot me an email and we will discuss it from there!”

Have you ever had a paranormal experience of your own?

“I work in an old theater (built in the 30s) and though no one has found any information on it, we believe someone died there. There have been rumors of singing coming from the balcony late at night, items flying off of shelves, things crashing on one side of the building when the crew is leaving through a door on the other. I have experienced the last two.”

What is the story behind your crocheting projects?

“I wanted to make things that aren’t seen every day in the crochet niche, such as skull gloves, cryptid dolls, or anime figurines. I also enjoy being able to take a hook and some yarn and turn it into something unique and colorful that cannot be mass-produced, and it is something that the recipient will cherish!”

“Art trades are open! Please shoot me an email at batwingsandbutterflies.shop@yahoo.com or on Instagram @bastwingsandbutterflies (this is also where you’ll find current news about local shows and markets I will be attending and any upcoming website drops!)”

“Please have patience with me! I am the only person behind BWAB and sometimes the books get busy. Shoot me a message with any questions or check the FAQ on my site for more!”
