Shooting at a McDonald's in Near North Side Chicago
At around 10:40pm on Thursday night, 2 people were killed and at least 7 injured in a shooting at a McDonald’s on the Near North Side of Chicago.
Initially, police reported that 10 people were shot, but the number has changed to 9.
The crime scene became chaotic as police searched the CTA Red Line station, and stopped at least one train. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, one person suffered burns when she fell against a rail while fleeing the shooting.
According to the Chicago Tribune, as police and paramedics were on scene, another fight erupted between two people.
Reportedly, a group of people crossed police tape and argued with officers before they were pushed back.
One witness, Deonna Jackson, 18, described her experience of the initial fight: “The teens started rushing towards me and they’re all attacking one person — they were jumping someone.”
Police have arrested one suspect so far and recovered a gun. The dead have yet to be identified, and police have not released information about the victims. Early this morning, the Chicago Police Department Leaders held a press conference to address the mass shooting and other violence in downtown Chicago. David Brown, the Chicago police Superintendent, has called the situation a personal conflict. He also acknowledged that, “We are awash in guns”.
One victim is in a “grave” condition, and the other 4 gunshot victims who were hospitalized are all in serious to critical condition.
The victims were taken to several different hospitals, which led to confusion at the scene. Many of the victims' friends and families were unsure of which hospital to go to.
