Retired police lieutenant kills library officer during training exercise
Maurica Manyan, a 25-year-old library officer, was shot and killed on August 4, 2022, at 3:30 p.m. while in the lower-level training room of the Anacostia Neighborhood Library. Former 58-year-old Metropolitan police officer Jesse Porter has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the shooting.
According to NBC News, Porter was hired by the Anacostia Neighborhood Library to train its officers on using expendable batons.
After the shooting, a police officer responding to the scene overheard Porter say something along the lines of, “I thought I had my training gun. Why did I do this? Is she okay?” while performing CPR on Manyan. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Witnesses told authorities that Porter and Manyan appeared to be joking around when his gun was fired.
A police officer with Porter Consulting and Expert Tactical Training said that Porter had his training weapon throughout the session and may have swapped it out for his firearm when they were getting ready to leave.
The officer said, “He [Porter] does not play with live ammunition and live weapons, and it is not in his character.”
Porter appeared in court on Friday and was released pending trial. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on August 24.
