Armed Man Arrested on the Way to Kavanaugh's House

CBS News reports that, early this morning, a man was arrested near the home of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Reportedly, the man had a gun and a knife on his person and had made violent threats against Kavanaugh. The Washington Post reports that the man allegedly told police that he wanted to kill Kavanaugh. Other sources say that the man had made violent threats against Kavanaugh on social media. Supreme Court spokeswoman, Patricia McCabe, said that the man was arrested around 1:50am on Wednesday, June 8, 2022. He was taken to the Montgomery County Police 2nd District in Bethesda, Maryland. Officials have not released the name of the suspect, but he is in his 20s.

Supreme Court Police and the Department of Homeland Security have reported a “significant increase in violent threats”, including those made on social media, and in particular those addressed to members of the court. This increase is directly linked to the release of a draft of the Supreme Court opinion, which alluded to the idea that a majority of Supreme Court Justices had voted to overturn Roe v. Wade. This landmark decision would overturn the legislation that made abortion legal nationwide – returning the power of legislating abortion to individual state governments.

This has proven to be an extremely volatile issue, leading to both threats of, and actual violence.

FOX News reports that the man was picked up on a street near Kavanaugh’s home, but that he did not make it into the building.

U.S. Marshals and the Montgomery County Police Department are leading the investigation.
