Another set of human remains found at Lake Mead
The dramatic drop in the water levels at Lake Mead has caused bodies and sunken objects to surface. As of Monday, a third set of human remains has been found in the largest man-made reservoir in the U.S.
On July 25, the National Park Service (NPS) released a statement saying that human remains were discovered at Swim Beach in Lake Mead at around 4:30 p.m. A medical examiner was contacted to perform an autopsy, but no information has been released. The NPS news release said that at this time there are no plans to release further information, and that the investigation is ongoing.
A month earlier, on May 1, the body of a homicide victim was found in a barrel. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department detectives believe the male victim was murdered in the mid-1970’s or early 1980’s by a gunshot wound. Police Homicide Lieutenant Ray Spencer reached the conclusion about the time of the murder because “the victim’s clothes and shoes were sold at Kmart in the mid-to-late 1970s.”
On May 7, less than a week later, another set of remains were found by two paddle boarders at around 2 p.m.
When asked about the two bodies found at the lake in May, Police Homicide Lieutenant Ray Spencer said, “The lake has drained dramatically over the last 15 years. It’s likely that we will find additional bodies that have been dumped in Lake Mead” as the water levels continue to decline.
The drop in the water levels has also revealed boats, including a World War II landing craft and one of the reservoir’s original water valves.
