A woman was killed by her ex-husband in a murder-suicide

Sania Khan, 29, was fatally shot by her ex-husband, Raheel Ahmed, 36, in her condominium in Streeterville, Chicago, on Monday afternoon before he turned the gun on himself.

Police received a call about a welfare check at around 4:30 p.m. When they arrived outside Khan’s home, officers heard a shot being fired and a “verbal groan.” When officers tried to enter the home, Ahmed committed suicide.

Once inside, police found the body of Sania Khan near the door with a gunshot wound in the back of her head, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Raheel Ahmed was found in a bedroom with a gunshot wound to the head, holding a 9mm Glock pistol. A suicide note was found nearby.

Khan’s death was ruled a homicide and Ahmed’s death a suicide.

According to Ahmed’s family, Ahmed seemed distraught and depressed. He was heading to Chicago to save his marriage, even though the pair’s divorce was finalized in May.

Sania Khan had just moved to Chicago in June 2021 and was working as a professional photographer.

After the divorce, she started posting on TikTok about her post-divorce recovery journey. On her TikTok page, she has “going through a divorce/healing” in her profile biography.

In one of her posts, she wrote, “The sadness that comes with the realization that you spent years of your life with someone but never truly knew them.”

In another post, she wrote, “It’s painful to walk away from someone you once loved. But it’s even more painful to love someone who is careless with your heart.”

A GoFundMe page was created to help the family arrange the funeral and provide any other assistance needed. All extra money raised will be donated to a non-profit focused on domestic violence.
