20 People Killed in Mass Shooting in Mexico
Twenty people were shot and killed on Sunday at a cockfighting pit in the state of Michoacán, located in western Mexico.
The attack took place in the small town of Las Tinajas, and multiple gunmen were involved. BBC News reports that the area around Las Tinajas is “disputed by a number of gangs which engage in the smuggling of stolen petrol and illegal tapping of petrol pipes owned by the state-run oil company.”
CBS reports that the attack may have been motivated by revenge of one cell of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel to another. The Department of Justice considers the Jalisco cartel to be “one of the five most dangerous transnational criminal organizations in the world.”
The identities of the victims of Sunday’s attack have not been revealed, and the investigation remains ongoing.
