Six Teenagers Shot in Downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee

Six teenagers were shot following an altercation between two groups of people in downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee late Saturday night.

Patrolling officers heard gunfire at about 11 p.m. in the Cherry Street area. When police arrived they witnessed “multiple parties exchanging gunfire and numerous people fleeing the scene.”

According to Chattanooga Police Chief Celeste Murphy, two individuals from one group fired towards one intended target. All of the other injuries were unintended. She also stated that all the victims were teenagers.

Four of the victims suffered non-life threatening injuries and two remain “very very critical” according to Murphy’s statement.

In a Twitter thread, Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly says he is heartbroken for the families whose lives were upended by gunfire. He goes onto say that parents need to be responsible, and if they know a child has access to a gun they should call police immediately.

Kelly said he joins mayors across America calling upon the Senate to pass gun reform safety laws.

The chief said no arrests have been made. One person has been detained as a person of interest but has since ruled out as a suspect.
