Angelina Barini, the Modern-Day Aileen Wuornos
A serial killer from New York City will spend the next 30 years of her life in prison for fatally drugging four men in 2019.
Angelina Barini, 43, was arrested in August 2019 and plead guilty to two counts of distributing narcotics that caused the deaths of a person, one count of distributing fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine, and one count of conspiring to distribute gamma-butyrolactone according to People Magazine.
Barini allegedly used her position as a sex worker to lure men into hotel rooms where she would drug them with Fentanyl or the date-rape drug GBL before robbing them and disposing of their bodies.
The only victim who has been publicly identified is Andrea Zamperoni. Zamperoni, 33, was a chef at Manhattan’s Cipriani Dolci, a high-profile restaurant often frequented by celebrities. Barini and her then-boyfriend, 44-year-old Leslie Lescano, lured Zamperoni to a Queens hotel where they spiked his drink with GBL. He passed out and died shortly thereafter.
Investigators found Barini and Lescano in their hotel room—the same one where they killed Zamperoni—and arrested them. Zamperoni’s decomposing body was stuffed upside down in a garbage can in the corner of the motel room.
When a federal judge sentenced Barini to 30 years in prison on Tuesday, reactions were mixed. Barini’s sister, who identified herself to the New York Post as Sally, said the sentence was “harsh” and that her sister had a troubled upbringing and various drug addictions that should have been considered. Sally put partial blame on Barini’s victims as well:
“They weren’t saints. They went with her. They wanted to party and they wanted to do drugs with her and have sex. It wasn’t like she put a gun to somebody’s head and forced them to go with her” Sally said.
A cousin of one of Barini’s victims felt differently. Speaking before the sentencing, the cousin stated that she felt no sympathy for Barini.
“I understand she doesn’t have a good history. I don’t have a good history. It’s no excuse. She killed four people. She deserves what she gets.”
