Alabama Man Arrested For Murder of His Girlfriend and Her Father

Police say that 41-year-old John Scott III has been arrested in St. Augustine, Florida, after fleeing authorities in Alabama. He was arrested in connection with the murders of his girlfriend, 40-year-old Sharon Tarwater, and her father, 75, in Helena, Alabama.

Scott reportedly killed Sharon and Chester at their shared home on the 100 block of Piney Woods Drive, last Wednesday, January 19th. Sharon Tarwater’s 12-year-old son found his grandfather the living room. He then found his grandmother with dementia unharmed before going to a neighbors to call for help. Sharon was found by investigators in another room of the house, according to Oxygen.

Sharon’s 12-year-old and 16-year-old sons are in the care of the Department of Human Resources. Family members say Sharon was the mother of two girls, as well as adopting two of her nephews and had a close relationship with her father according to WBRC.

Two warrants for capital murder charges were issued for Scott on Sunday. The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office received possible information that Scott could have been in the county, and police began searching for his car. Scott immediately surrendered to police and was booked into the St. John’s County Jail.

Shelby County Task Force members and detectives with the Helena Police Department are making travel arrangements to go to St. Augustine.
