Why ‘Kindred Spirits’ is the Best Paranormal Investigation Show on Television Right Now
Most paranormal enthusiast television-watchers have probably heard of ‘Ghost Adventures’ or ‘Ghost Hunters.’ While they certainly have their differences, both shows follow the same pattern each episode. A team of 5-6 investigators and their large camera crews go to notoriously haunted locations and try to collect evidence that’s presentable to a television viewer. Both shows have their own styles—‘Ghost Adventures’ is kind of like clickbait for television; it’s almost comically over-the-top and their evidence is flimsy at best. ‘Ghost Hunters’ is more fact-based, using the newest technology to either prove or disprove that a location is haunted.
The hosts of Travel Channel’s ‘Kindred Spirits,’ Adam Berry and Amy Bruni, were members of the ‘Ghost Hunters’ team before branching off to make their own show. Instead of going to locations that are ‘notorious’ for being haunted, Berry and Bruni often go to houses where the homeowners or tenants have had terrifying paranormal experiences. The victims who call on ‘Kindred Spirits’ are at their wits end and looking for ways to understand and cope with the paranormal activity.
The first night usually involves an EVP (Electric Voice Phenomenon) session. Using a recording device, Amy and Adam ask a series of questions. They review the EVPs in real time, adding credibility to the evidence. Then, they conduct historical research and enlist the help of psychic Chip Coffey. They never antagonize the spirits, and always demonstrate empathy. By the end of the episode, Amy and Adam can provide ways that the homeowners can coexist with the spirits. They don’t necessarily believe that the dead must ‘move on’ to the afterlife. In fact, they try and humanize the dead which, ironically, helps the living.
