Self-Defense Strategies For Women
Women must take charge of their own safety. In order to do so, women must be prepared for any type of situation. According to BlackBeltMag.com, records indicate that most women typically sign up for self-defense classes after being attacked, however, there are many ways to stay prepared and protected before it’s too late.
BlackBeltMag.com says the first thing you should do is trust your instincts. Anthony Moss, a self-defense instructor and former police officer, stresses the importance of “situational awareness” when it comes to any situation, but especially while walking alone. This can mean something as simple as being cognizant of your surroundings and being aware of your gut feeling.
Target denial and body language are huge factors in keeping yourself safe. As attackers typically target women who seem weak and vulnerable, it is important to walk with confidence and eliminate any potential distractions. Distractions may include cell phone usage, listening to music, and more.
In the event that you are being attacked, Moss advises women to focus on the concept of self-defense rather than fighting. You do not need to necessarily “win,” but more so escape and find safety. Strategies to defend yourself include using joints or body parts which can inflict damage, such as, elbows, nails, knees and even teeth. Many self-defense instructors advise women to go for the groin, as it can easily cause harm. However, it is important to follow through with any defense, as it is never truly “over” until the threat no longer exists.
Self-defense gadgets or tools are also an option, but it is important to note that these gadgets are only effective when properly used. Common mistakes made when carrying these gadgets include not knowing how to properly use it, carrying it in a place where you would have to dig for it or relying too much on the gadget. Therefore, it is important to avoid these mistakes, create an action plan, and be mentally, as well as, physically prepared for any type of situation.
