Former Mississippi officer pleads guilty to 2019 murder of former lover

Former Mississippi police officer is set to plead guilty to a May 2019 murder. Matthew Kinne, 38, agreed to life in prison without possibility of parole.

Kinne admits to murdering his former lover as she threatened to tell his then wife about their affair. The victim, 32-year-old Dominique Clayton, was shot in the head by Kinne as she slept. She was a mother of four.

A 2019 People article revealed relatives told Fox13 the children were returning home from a weekend with their uncle. In an attempt to prank his mom, Clayton’s 8-year-old son entered the home only to find his mother shot dead.

Dominque’s sister, Shyjuan Clayton, described her as “crazy and silly” to Fox13. She said her sister was always “the life of the party” and things “won’t be the same without her.”

At the time of the murder, Kinne served as an officer with the Oxford Police Department for four years. He was not on duty when he killed Clayton.

Since his arrest in 2019, Kinne has been waiting for a trial. The same year Kinne was transferred to Union County jail after being seen eating at a guard station unsupervised and with no restraints.

According to the Oxford Eagle, his sentencing will begin today at the Union County Courthouse in New Albany.

Clayton’s family has since filed a wrongful death suit for $5 million and await a decision.
