California Governor Rejects Parole for Manson Follower Leslie Van Houten
California Gov. Gavin Newsome rejected the state’s parole board recommendation to release Manson follower Leslie Van Houten for the fifth time, CNN reports.
Van Houten, now 72, was convicted in 1971 for her role in the 1969 stabbing murders of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. She was originally sentenced to death, but her sentence was commuted to life in prison when California overturned the death penalty.
The Governor stated that “Ms. Van Houten continues to lack sufficient insight into the risk factors that led to her violent conduct in the past and the skills to protect against her becoming susceptible to similar pressures in the future.”
Van Houten is scheduled to return for another parole suitability hearing in May 2023.
