Suspects Arrested in Connection with Disappearance of Kristin Smart
Authorities arrested two suspects Tuesday morning for the 1996 disappearance of Kristin Smart. Paul Flores, 44, has been the prime suspect of the case for years, according to CNN. Officers obtained a search warrant in 2020 to look through Flores' home, and found numerous "items of interest." They booked Flores on murder charges with no bail. Along with arresting Paul Flores, his father, 80-year-old Ruben Flores, was charged with accessory to murder. Both suspects are expected to appear in court Thursday. Kristin Smart, then 19, disappeared near her college dorm May 25, 1996. She walked home from a frat party with her friends, but split from the group when she reached her dorm. Police say that that was the last place anyone saw her. Although officials never recovered her body, she was declared dead in 2002. Since then, her family worked with the police to explore new leads and gather as much information as possible to find out what happened to her.Although this is a success for the investigation, her family is calling it a "bittersweet day," according to CBS.
