Brandon Elliot was arrested on Wednesday after viciously attacking a 65-year-old Filipino immigrant two days prior. The woman, later identified to be Vilma Kari, was on her way to church near Times Square in New York City when Elliot kicked her down and began beating her. He kicked Kari in the stomach and stomped on her face, shouted anti-Asian slurs and told her, “you don’t belong here.”

Juanito Falcon, a 74-year-old Arizona man, was murdered on Feb. 16, 2021, while he was out on a walk. Marcus Williams, 40, attacked Falcon on his morning walk at random. Relatives of Falcon are convinced his killing was a hate crime, and that he was targeted because he was Asian.

Today, most transgender murder cases continue to remain unsolved in the United States because police are struggling to connect with LGBTQ+ communities and properly represent victims in the media. Several experts and advocates for the transgender and LGBTQ+ communities have stated that United States police routinely fail to protect transgender victims via illformed state hate crime laws and improper identification practices such as misgendering and misnaming individuals.

After an arraignment on Wednesday, notorious New York City “Subway Attacker” Khari Covington is now facing a 52-count indictment against him for burglary, assault and strangulation as hate crimes. Covington allegedly targeted “light-skinned women” during a string of attacks that occurred between August 2020 and January 4 in Brooklyn’s East Williamsburg neighborhood. Most of the attacks happened in the Morgan Avenue subway station, but one took place near the station and another at a smoke shop.

With the death of Samuel Edmund Damian Valentin, seven trans people have been killed Puerto Rico within the past year. LGBTQ+ activists like Pedro Julio Serrano are demanding that the government declare a state of emergency for gender violence and hate crimes. Additionally, the violence is the worst it has been in over a decade. In 2020, more trans people were murdered in the U.S. than in 2019.

Rep. Sharon Wylie, D-Vancouver, evoked the memory of slain transgender teen Nikki Kuhnhausen before her colleagues last week approved a bill limiting so-called panic defenses.

Kuhnhausen, 17, disappeared in early June. Her remains were discovered Dec. 7 after a human skull was found in the woods at Larch Mountain, southeast of Battle Ground.

The man accused of killing 22 people and wounding two dozen more in a shooting that targeted Mexicans in the border city of El Paso, Texas, has been charged with federal hate crimes, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.
