Last wednesday, Greenville County Police responded to a call regarding a suspect now identified as 44-year-old Anthony Shay Hawthorne. FOX Carolina reported that he had fired towards his mother. Officers found the suspect armed, refusing to leave the home. To enhance his barricade, the suspect allegedly created a flamethrower using aerosol spray and a lighter before igniting it at three deputies.
During the intense eight hours officers used several tactics to get the suspect to leave the home. After gas and robots and other tools were used, deputies deployed 4 year-old K-9 Nikos.
“Nikos put his own life on the line in an attempt to get the man in custody and while doing so was shot multiple times by the suspect,” the sheriff’s office said.
After suffering from several dog bite injuries, Hawthorne was taken into custody, the sheriff said. Niko unfortunately severely injured and was taken into surgery for his gunshot wounds. He is know at home recovering.
