A man pleads not guilty by reason of insanity in the double homicide of a young man and woman.
20 year old Joseph Jimenez is pleading not guilty by reason of insanity. Jimenez is charged with the murders of Anthony Barajas and Rylee Goodrich. The victims were killed earlier this summer on July 26. The couple was watching the Forever Purge at the Regal Edwards Corona Crossings in Corona. Jimenez fatally shot the couple and they were later found shot in the head by movie theater employees. Goodrich was pronounced dead on the scene. Barajas was rushed to a hospital and put on life support. Barajas passed away a few days later on July 31. The District Attorney’s Office for the County of Riverdale believe the attack was random and unprovoked. According to Corona Police, Jimenez was arrested just a day later on July 27.
CBS News reports that Jimenez did not speak during his hearing. A representative for the district attorney office claims the trial will be in two phases if the case goes to trial. There would be a not guilty phase and then another trial to determine Jimenez’s sanity. Attorneys will return to court on Oct 22. to discuss the appointment of a defense psychiatrist.
