Another film Friday has arrived, and for this week, The Invitation is up for grabs.
Director Karyn Kusama’s psychological thriller The Invitation describes the story of Will (Logan Marshall-Green) as he attends a dinner party hosted by his ex-wife, accompanied by his girlfriend, Kira (Emayatzy Corinealdi).
Upon arriving, Will is met with his ex-wife, Eden (Tammy Blanchard), and her new husband, David (Michiel Huisman). The new couple had met in Mexico during a grief support group following the death of Eden’s and Will’s child, Ty. Aside from Will and Kira—other guests have arrived; this has been the first time the group has gotten together since two years ago.
Some time into the party, David and Eden share the cult-like group that helps people cope with their grief. Dr. Joseph runs this cult-like group; the couple introduces him through a film, in which he is seen comforting a dying woman. After the presentation, the group begins to play an “I Want,” where the tension starts to stir. While these events occur, Will is found wandering through memory lane, recalling memories of his son. However, David believes that Will is acting suspiciously due to his absence as he walks around the house.
As dinner arrives, the tension between everyone in the group appears mild, and things only continue to build up. Finally, towards the end of the film, Will and Kira discover an uncomfortable truth.
While watching the film, traces from the film Would You Rather? appeared in the movie—for instance, a dinner party with sinister intentions, followed by the aftermath of shock and trauma.
If any fellow MMNster enjoys psychological horror movies, I highly recommend watching this film! What other psychological horror films do you recommend?
