A Brooklyn mother has been charged with attempted murder after she threw her two children out of an apartment window in Brooklyn, NY on Saturday, June 12.
According to Pix11 News, police said the call came in just before 11:30 a.m. at the apartment building on Rockaway Parkway, near Winthrop Street, in Brownsville.
The NYPD reported that the 24-year-old mother pushed the air conditioner out of her bedroom window, then threw her newborn baby out, down two-and-a-half stories to the pavement. The mother then threw her 2-year-old son out the window as well.
She then jumped naked out of the window, according to officials. It is not immediately known which floor the apartment was located on.
According to Pix11 News, a witness said the woman slammed the baby on the cement before a neighbor was able to jump over a fence and get in the way. Eyewitnesses told Pix11 News, that it could have been much worse had the neighbor not intervened.
The mother and her two children were rushed to an area hospital, where the infant is listed in critical condition, police said. The mom and toddler’s conditions were described as “stable” by authorities, according to Pix11 News.
On June 13, the mother was identified as Dejhanny Jarrell, according to Kiro7 News. She has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault, two counts of reckless endangerment and two counts of acting in a manner injurious to a child.
Carl Chin, whose apartment window faces the alley where the children were thrown, at first thought the incident was an accident, he told Kiro7 News.
“I was sitting in my bedroom and first I heard a baby crying and then we heard a loud thunk, like a body hit the ground,” Chin told Kiro7 News, “After the mom landed and fell on the floor, she got up and picked the baby up by the leg and dropped her at least two times. So I jumped over the fence and basically wrestled with her to get the child.”
Had it not been for the swift action of Chin the outcome could have been much worse for the children. Police said what lead to the incident is unclear, but mental illness may have been a factor.
