A transgender man was just arriving back home to the Bronx when he became a victim of a violent hate crime.
NYPD sources have confirmed that 54-year-old Troy Tyrell has been arrested for slashing Khleo Finnie, 23, and his wife on an N.Y.C. subway.
Early Friday morning, Finnie and his wife came back to New York after having an emotional visit in South Carolina with his family. In an interview with the NY Daily News, Finnie’s wife said they were planning to move there and, “Save up some money,” and hopefully work at his brother’s construction company. But plans feel through after he was rejected by his family.
“It didn’t work out. His family still doesn’t accept his lifestyle. His brother said he wouldn’t even be able to go outside the way he his, because he’s trans.”
Finnie’s wife noted that while riding the subway, Tyrell had been smoking drugs from train cart to train cart. He then launched into spewing out transphobic slurs towards the couple. As he continues his hate filled rant, he approached Finnie and kicked him in the face. Finnie pulled out a knife and Tyrell wrested it away from him and slashed him in the arm and then attempts to stab Finnie’s wife in the torso.
Tyrell then attempted to flee from the subway once the train stopped but was arrested by police that the couple were able to flag down. He has also been charged with assault as a hate crime and criminal possession of a weapon.
It has also been confirmed that Tyrell had previously served 10 years in prison for a 1991 murder in the Bronx. He was released in 2003.
