The mother of a 14-year-old boy charged with first degree murder in Florida has been arrested for tampering with evidence, according to St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.
Aiden Fucci is accused of murdering 13-year-old Tristyn Bailey by stabbing her 114 times. Fucci is being charged as an adult in the brutal murder due to the nature of the crime, according to Yahoo News.
Crystal Smith, Fucci’s mother, was arrested on Saturday, June 5, after authorities alleged she tried to scrub the blood from her son’s jeans.
Smith, 35, was present when authorities interviewed Fucci following Bailey’s disappearance, Yahoo News reported. When authorities left the room with her son, Smith was captured on surveillance video washing what appeared to be his jeans in the bathroom sink. The jeans and the sink later tested positive for blood, according to the arrest warrant.
“Tampering with evidence is tampering with justice and cannot be excused or tolerated,” State Attorney R.J. Larizza said in a statement.
Smith entered the detention facility at noon on Saturday and was released less than two hours later, according to CNN. It is not yet known if she has legal representation.
The investigation is ongoing, according to the sheriff’s office.
