A jury charged the US ‘Doomsday’ couple at the centre of a long-running investigation with murder.
Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell are more commonly known as the Doomsday couple because of their apocalyptic beliefs. Daybell is an author of several apocalyptic novels based on Mormon teachings. The couple met through their involvement in a movement preparing for the end of the world.
The couple face first-degree murder charges for the death of Vallow’s children from two previous marriages, Joshua JJ Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ryan, 17. Police found the bodies of the children at Daybell’s home in 2020. The younger son’s body was wrapped in tight black plastic and tape, with the older son being dismembered and burned.
The children were last seen on different dates in September 2019. However, their missing was not reported until November by their grandparents. Authorities said the mother had provided misleading answers to the children’s disappearance.
Police arrested Vallow in February 2020 for child abandonment and arrested Daybell later in 2020. Daybell also faces charges of murder, with his ex-wife Tammy Daybell dying suddenly weeks before his re-marriage.
The couple remained in custody for over a year, after accusations of concealing evidence. They also face conspiracy, theft, and insurance fraud charges. However, May 25 marks the first murder charges in the case.
According to Fremont County Prosecutor Lindsey Blake, “We have cause to believe that the Daybells wilfully and knowingly conspired to commit murder of three innocent people.” The court announced the charges on what would have been JJ’s ninth birthday.
