Saturday the 22nd, a man and his son walked by a papier-mâché dinosaur in Barcelona when they noticed a stench coming from the statue. After noticing a crack in the Stegosaurus’s leg, the father found the body of a man.
He immediately called the local Spanish authorities, the Mossos d’ Esquadra. Firefighters were able to pry open the hollow leg and recover the man’s body. The Spanish police have released the man age as 39-years-old but have not released his name.
A representative for the local police says the 39-year-old man fell into the statue after trying to retrieve a phone. They believe he got stuck and was unable to call for help. There is no foul play suspected.
Police told the Guardian the man could have been in the dinosaur for days. The man was reported missing by family members just hours before he was found according to the Washington Post.
The statue originally sat outside the Cubic Building in Santa Coloma de Gramenet to promote an old theater. It has since been relocated. Now, flowers sit next to the leg the man was rescued from.
