A gunman opened fire at a Colorado birthday party on May 9, killing six as well as himself.
According to police, the shooting happened after midnight in a mobile home park in Colorado Springs. When officers arrived at the trailer, they found six dead adults and one injured man. Emergency services took the injured victim to hospital, where he later died from the serious injuries.
The suspect was the boyfriend of a female victim at the party. According to police, the suspect walked inside and opened fire before shooting himself. A neighbour believed the noise to be a thunderstorm until the police arrived.
No children inside the trailer were harmed, however they were all “crying hysterically” after witnessing the attack. The children are currently under supervision with relatives.
Freddie Marquez, 33, announced his mother-in-law as one of the victims. Marquez himself left the part at 22:30 before the attack. After midnight, he received a call from another victim’s son telling him of the news.
Chief Vince Niski of Colorado Springs PD, said “My heart breaks for the families who have lost someone they love and for the children who have lost their parents”.
Authorities say the motive is unknown at this point in the investigation. Police will release the names of the victims at a later date.
