Milpitas, California – This past Friday morning, Elijah Cruz Segura, boyfriend of 24-year-old drag artist/entertainer, Natalia Smut (Lopez), phoned police to their home. When they arrived, authorities found Smut laying on the ground with severe injuries. Police then took Segura into custody after he claimed responsibility.

Smut later died of her injuries at the hospital.

According to a tally from the Human Rights Campaign, they have recorded 10 violent deaths towards trans individuals towards the end of April 2020. Most victims were also said to have been of Black or Latinix heritage.

As of right now, prosecutors in Santa Clara County California have not provided a motive for Segura’s crime. They more than likely suspect it to be a case connected to domestic violence. Segura has pleaded not guilty to murder with a weapon enhancement.

Smut’s sister, Vanessa Singh, had these words to say about her sister on a GoFundMe page in memory of her:

“She would step into a room like a firework. Everywhere she went, she brought energy, fierce looks, and a personality that shined bright like a diamond. Her beautiful soul and presence is no longer here on Earth with us anymore, but she is forever in our hearts.”
