The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into an alleged murder-suicide involving a woman in Jasper County and a man in Putnam County.

Police were alerted about reports of gunfire in a Monticello neighborhood on Sunday night. Upon their arrival, they found Kira Ammons, 41, dead of gunshot wounds. Witnesses identified the suspected shooter as 38-year-old David Mathis.

Police were then dispatched to Mathis’ home where they were shot at upon their arrival. Deputies did not return fire and attempted but failed to make contact with Mathis.

One of Mathis’ relatives told police that he might be outside his mobile home, which is where authorities found him dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The GBI said no deputies were injured.

Ammons’ childhood friend, Phillip Marks Sr., describes her as sweet, humble, and laidback.
