Earlier today, I was awoken by the sounds of numerous police sirens racing by a local highway not too far from my home. What I did not know at the time was that a suspect in a local mass shooting had lead authorities on a chase.
According to NBC News, two people were killed by the suspect and another individual was injured in three separate shootings in the Los Angeles area. The shootings each occurred within minutes of each other, said police.
The first shooting occurred around 1:15 AM at the intersection of Exposition Boulevard and Figueroa Street in Downtown Los Angeles. This person was fortunate enough to escape the attempted murder with only minor injuries.
Moments after, the second shooting occurred a few blocks away from the first location after 1:15 AM. The victim was a driver waiting in line at a Starbucks drive-through and was shot by the gunman and died at the scene.
The final incident happened after 1:20 AM near the intersection of Figueroa and 7th Streets where the shooter pulled up next to a Cadillac Escalade and shot several rounds into the vehicle, per the Los Angeles Police Department. The passenger inside the SUV also died at the scene.
Around 5:30 AM PST the highway pursuit which took place on State Route 91 in Anaheim (25 miles Southeast of Downtown Los Angeles) came to a stop. The suspect was shot dead, and a weapon was found at the scene.
While the investigation is still pending, the names of the suspect and victims have not yet been released. A motive for the shootings is still unclear.
