Ponzu, known by Instagram handle @ponzucoolcat, with nearly 30,000 followers, was a beloved four-legged figure on the social media platform.
However, the owner of the Insta-famous cat has announced the passing of her beloved feline in a tragic attack that occurred over Easter weekend. In a post to Ponzu’s Instagram, it was shared that he died “after suffering shock and injuries from an incident in our park.”.
At the time of his passing, Poonzu was only 3 years and 4 months old.
Allegedly, Ponzu’s owner and her boyfriend were out on an evening walk through a park in Brooklyn, when a boy approached them. The boy, around 12, grabbed Ponzu by the leash and dragged him into the air before tossing him onto the ground.
Ponzu managed to escape, but not without severe injuries. When his owner recovered him, his back was bleeding severely. The mother of the boy then began a verbal barrage directed at Ponzu’s family. Accounts claim that she said (warning, censored expletives ahead) “don’t blame me, you’re the one who was wrong. Why did you take a cat [for a] walk?” she allegedly said. “This is what you [get] when you walk you f*****g cat b***h!”.
The attackers then escalated their tirade. Ponzu’s owner was punched and kicked by three women. Her boyfriend sustained a broken nose, so severe that it required surgery.
A police investigation is ongoing, and the family intends to seek charges against the perpetrators.
Ponzu’s owner believes that they were targeted due to their Asian heritage. If so, this event would be yet another targeted attack against Asian Americans, a cruel and racist trend developing in the United States.
Ponzu’s family said of their pet that “Ponzu was one of a kind, special. We fell in love with him from the first sight. He was gentle, caring, loving, playful, and handsome. He was curious and loved outdoors. He was well travelled. And he brought joy and smile to millions across the globe.”.
