A student is dead, and a police officer is injured following a shooting that occurred at a Knoxville high school on Monday.
Around 3:15 p.m. on Monday, officers responded to reports of an armed individual located on the premises of Austin-East Magnet High School.
When the authorities arrived at the scene, they discovered the suspect in the school’s restroom. They then ordered him to exit, a command that he did not comply with. Instead, he fired shots at the officers, injuring one in the process. An officer returned fire, fatally shooting the gunman.
The perpetrator of the crime was identified at the scene as being a student at the school. The student, whose name has not been released to the public, was killed when officers returned fire.
Only one officer was injured during the event, and they immediately received medical attention. Their condition is not yet determined.
Knoxville Police Chief Eve Thomas informed the public that the event ” wasn’t a school shooting, this was an officer-involved shooting inside of a school, much different. At this point, the student hadn’t done anything with the firearm until the officers engaged,” Rausch claimed that, “It’s important to make that distinction.”
