Five people are dead after a gunman went on a murderous rampage in South Carolina. The perpetrator of the crime has been revealed to be former NFL player Philip Adams.

It took York County Officials several hours of searching before they discovered the deceased suspect in a home near the site of the shooting.

Adams began his football career by starring at South Carolina State. He then went on to play in 78 NFL games over five seasons for six teams. Including being most well-known as the defensive back for the 49ers, as well as the Atlanta Falcons. It was with the Falcons that Adams made the decision to step away from football, retiring in 2015.

During his time as an athlete, Adams suffered several injuries such as concussions and a broken left ankle

Alonzo Adams, the father of the shooter, shared with the press that he believed that the injuries his son sustained while playing football were at least partially to blame for the attack. He affirmed that while “I can say he’s a good kid…I think the football messed him up”.

The victims of the attack were identified as handyman-James Lewis, 39; a prominent South Carolina Doctor-Dr. Robert Lesslie, 70; his wife, Barbara Lesslie, 69; their two young grandchildren, ages 5 and 9.

An unidentified sixth victim is currently being treated in the hospital with severe injuries.  Officials have yet to release any further information on their identity or condition.

The motive for the attack is yet unknown, with the investigation ongoing
