On Tuesday morning, a gunman opened fire at a Frederick business park. In his attack, two men, both of whom were Navy sailors stationed at Fort Detrick, were critically injured. The shooter then fled from the scene, attempting to escape to a nearby military base, where he was shot and killed by the authorities.
The two victims were flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. One of the two victims remains in critical condition, however, the other was treated and released Tuesday afternoon.
The motivating factor for Tuesday’s attack has yet to be discerned. Authorities are still investigating if the attack was specifically targeted or not. The perpetrator of the attack is identified as Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Fantahun Girma Woldesenbet. Like his victims, Woldesenbet had also been stationed at Fort Detrick.
Authorities have determined that Woldesenbet operated alone. Therefore, there was “no more risk, no further cause for alarm in the Frederick community”.
