Early Monday morning, Los Angeles Police Officers initiated an altercation in the area of Bixel and 9th. When they arrived around 3:50 a.m., the civilian attempted to flee the scene. When this tactic was unsuccessful, he then responded by drawing a handgun and beginning to shoot at police. At which point, officers felt it was necessary to return fire with decisive authority.
LAPD Officer Rosario Cervantes informed the press that while the man was transported to a hospital, he, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries.
The handgun that the man used in the shootout was recovered at the scene. This investigation is still ongoing as, it is unclear why the man felt inclined to take such an aggressive offensive approach, or if the police initiated the hostile encounter.
