Police arrested a man in India for allegedly beheading his 17-year-old daughter on March 3.

Residents of Hardoi in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh called the police after seeing a man walking down the road carrying a head. According to Fox News, the man in question is Sarvesh Kumar.

According to BBC News, police footage shows Kumar admitting that he locked his daughter in her room. Kumar then decapitated her with a sharp object because he did not approve the man she was dating. Kumar can be heard saying, “I did it. There was no one else. I closed the latch and did it. The body is in the room.” He later confesses that finding out about his daughter’s relationship made him extremely angry.

Hundreds of girls are killed in India each year in honour killings after their families do not approve of their relationships. Moreover, Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of crimes against women across all of India. In 2011, the Indian Supreme Court ruled that those found guilty of honour killings would face the death penalty.

During the investigation, officials suspended a policeman for inappropriately sharing a photo of Kumar carrying the severed head. However, police continue to investigate the girl’s murder.
