Police found a carer who tried to kill an elderly disabled patient calmly listening to music after attempting to smother her with a pillow.
Police body camera footage shows Barry Riley’s, 62, arrest hours after her tried to kill his 75-year-old patient, Ann Skelton. Skelton suffers from a degenerative physical condition and communicates via a keyboard. During the attack, Skelton pressed her bedside buzzer, which alerted other staff members.
Furthermore, Riley stole more than £100,000 off Skelton for over two years. During this time, Riley had Power of Attorney over her finances.
According to the investigating officer Detective Sergeant Craig Basil, “Barry Riley claimed he was carrying out a mercy killing.” Throughout the trial at Bristol Crown Court, Riley claimed that Skelton asked him to help end her life because of her condition.
On February 26, a court sentenced Riley of West Yorkshire to 11 years and 8 months in jail. A few months after the attack, Skelton died. However, there is yet to be a link between the two events.
