A California man is facing attempted murder charges after allegedly trying to drown and bury his wife at a San Diego beach Wednesday night.
Jose Luis Mares III, 23, and his wife, who remains unidentified, were at Coronado Beach when they got into an argument. The argument turned physical when Mares tried throwing her in the ocean and burying her alive in a hole in the sand.
The woman was able to escape and flag down passersby on a nearby road, who helped her contact police.
Authorities found Mares hiding in a backyard nearby and arrested him.
The woman was treated for her injuries at the scene and transported to a trauma centre. Her condition is unknown.
Mares faces charges of suspicion of attempted murder, assault causing great bodily injury, domestic violence, false imprisonment, and violating the terms of his parole.
